Course Description This course will explore the various types of curriculum that exist within organizations as well as goals and philosophical orientations to education. Students will explore who controls the curriculum, how that control is exerted, how curricular decisions impact student learning and how one can lead curricular change.
Objectives The graduate student will:
Explore the multitude of curriculum types and definitions, their impact on student learning, and how they are embodied in one’s organization.
Identify traditional and emerging goals and philosophical orientations to education, their impact on student learning, how they are embodied in one’s organization, and one’s own beliefs.
Identify who controls the curriculum and how, its influence in academic and extra-curricular offerings, its influence on facilities and other resources, how student learning is impacted, how this control is embodies in one’s organization, and how you can lead curricular change.
Examine the curriculum development process and participants, articulate the process utilized in your organization, recommend changes based on course learning.

1. Active Class Participation
Come to class, actively participate, question, be respectful of others (verbally and nonverbally), examine issues from multiple perspectives. Participate in online discussions in a timely manner. Be respectful of others. Post insightful entries that move the discussion.
2. Reflection Papers -- Four Total (20 points each), due by midnight Sunday of week following discussion except last paper which is due last class.
Reflection 1. What purpose does education serve and what does learning look like? (due Sept 25, midnight) Discuss: a. What is and has been the purpose of education (historical and current) (pk-12 and higher ed)? b. What does/could education/learning look and feel like in classrooms and offices (pk-12 and higher ed)? c. What extras (beyond the Basics in the classroom) should be included and why (sports, clubs, services, etc)? d. Curriculum definitions. e. Reflection on your personal beliefs as well as how your office/classroom/organization operates.
Reflection 2. Calls for reform (due Oct 16, midnight) Discuss: a. Who wants what reforms and why? b. Do you agree with the reforms? Why/why not? c. How does your current practice mesh with calls for reform? d. What actions could you make in your practice (classroom/office/organization) to meet the calls for reform?
Reflection 3. Standards and curriculum approval process (due Nov 27, midnight) Discuss: a. The pros and cons of standards generally and proposed standards specifically. b. Your organization's stance on standards. c. Your personal stance on standards. d. The curriculum approval process in your organization. e. Changes you would recommend to your organization's curriculum approval process.
Reflection 4. Leading change (due in class Dec 17) Discuss: a. One change that is needed in your office/classroom/department/building/area/organization (discuss what and why, link to course discussions/readings) b. Leadership ideas/theories (from class) that will guide your actions c. A tentative implementation plan for making the change
